Attack of the double workout

It’s happened.

My weekend workouts have brought me to my knees.

It’s Sunday afternoon.  I’m wiped.  I’m already in my pajamas. It’s agony to stand up and walk, and sitting on the couch is about the only thing I can do.

I’m dreading the next time the baby needs me to get up and tend to her.

So what brought me to this sorry state?  Definitely Saturday’s team workout, with a run and a double WOD on top.

Jenny and I ran a couple of miles Sunday morning, since the Paramount 5K is closing in fast.

Then, Beth and Stephanie and I met at Zilker around midday to do Week 5′s endurance WOD.

16 rounds tabata running
20 sec sprints / 10 sec rest

We started on the trail across Barton Creek from Lou Neff Point and headed east to Auditorium Shores.  In the 8 minutes, we made it there and then some, covering 1 mile — which is pretty fast for me.  I actually thought this one was going to be fun, but with the rests so short, it was hard to regroup.  I found myself gasping the time to the others, only to hear the bell a second later.

We walked back to the playscape, which was a nice recovery.  Then Stephanie and I decided to knock out one more WOD for the week.  It was a calculated decision to pile up 2 workouts in one day.  I already knew I was going to be tired on Monday.  I chose to rest instead of pushing through until Friday without one.

We chose a spot in the field near the playscape at Zilker.  We got quite a few looks as we swung around those dumbbells, which was awesome.  I love attracting attention sometimes.

I had Beth take some pictures of us while she timed the workout.  Here’s what we did:

Sumo Deadlift High Pull
Swings
Burpees

Time: 8:03

I used a 30# dumbbell (the weight for the elite level).

I think I’m going to go to sleep early tonight.  Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Bringing up baby

The house is so calm and quiet right now.  It’s before 7, so the sun isn’t even up.  I’ve been up for nearly 2 hours, and I’ve managed to fold laundry, empty the dishwasher, eat my pre-run snack, do a little web work, and drink a steaming mug of coffee.

Believe it or not, this is heaven for me.

I’ve also been listening to a series of podcasts from one of my favorite nutritional websites: Everyday Paleo.  Sarah, of Everyday Paleo, and Chrissy, of Growing up Paleo, are the women behind this podcast, and it’s AWESOME.  And the reason I love it is because it’s focused on moms and kids and families following the paleo lifestyle.

Madeline sits up on a mat

Mads is going to be 5 months near the end of this month, and she’s fast-approaching the time when we will start introducing solid food.  Her doctor has already talked to me about introducing solid food.  He said we could go ahead and start, but I’m holding off until 6 months.  Breast is best until then!  But at 6 months, she’s going to be ready.

But here’s the thing.  The pediatrician says to introduce rice first.  Hmmmm….

I would rather not go the grain direction if at all possible, so I’m reading everything I can.  But before I go playing around with the doctor’s recommendations (and Mads’ health), I want to know everything I can.  So the podcasts and blogs are helpful.

Other than that, I’ll probably follow pretty much the same road as the one I took with Luke.  I found that making his food was incredibly easy.   And cheap!  Have you seen the price of organic baby food jars?   It’s nuts!  All I had to do was buy a bag of organic fruit or vegetables, steam it, puree it and freeze it.  Voila!  Homemade food without the salt and preservatives!

Until then, I’m focusing on my nutrition, for both me AND Mads.  She’s gaining weight really well and seems to have few physical reactions to what I’m eating (except for gas — probably from those cruciferous veggies I’m eating!)  The doctor has no complaints, so it looks like my nutrition is working for us!
